Everything You Should Know About Fire Extinguishers

Having the right fire prevention equipment is critical to preventing injuries and significant dangers.

Fire extinguishers are essential pieces of equipment that every business should have in their facility. Regardless of whether you’re looking at a residential or commercial building, having the right fire prevention equipment is critical to preventing injuries and significant dangers. There are plenty of factors to consider before you purchase a fire extinguisher.

What Rating Is Needed?

The first thing you must know about fire extinguishers is that there are several ratings that can be used including a number and letter scale. These relate to the effectiveness of the extinguisher and note what each is best used for. Extinguishers for home use are often labeled with an A, B, C, D, or F to denote the category.

How Many Should You Have?

Depending on the size of the building and the number of risks you may need a different number of extinguishers on hand. It is best to contact a local fire professional to assess what will be best. Additionally, note that size may not indicate effectiveness.

How Are They Used?

Modern extinguishers all operate using a method known as PASS, or Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Start by holding the unit away from you and pulling out the safety pin to release the locking mechanism. Target the fire’s source (rather than the flames),  with a low aim and be sure that you’re standing approximately two meters away. When you are sure you’re not attempting to spray into the wind, squeeze the lever slowly and evenly while keeping the body upright. Using a sweeping motion spray until the fire is out or the extinguisher is empty. In general, it’s best to empty your extinguisher to be sure that the fire is entirely out. When you’ve used your unit be sure that it is refilled or replaced quickly to prevent later accidents.
