For any homeowner or renter, fire safety is of the utmost importance. Fires can become life-threatening in a matter of minutes and in no time, your entire home could be smothered in flames. Fire awareness can save lives, and it is extremely vital that you become educated on how fires work. Not only awareness can protect you, however. Remember, fires tend to happen to people when they least expect it, and they can happen to anyone. There are so many actions you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of residential fires. Proper preventative measures should be taken as well to ensure your safety. Keep reading to learn some helpful tips in preventing fires in your home.

Smoke Detectors

Installing smoke detectors is the first thing you should do when moving into a new place. Even if the home already has smoke detectors, is it a good idea to test their efficacy and change their batteries as soon as you move in. Smoke detectors should be installed on each floor of your home and near any bedrooms as well. Test your smoke detectors at least once per month and replace them completely every 10 years. Even if they go off, do not disable a smoke detector while cooking, as you can easily forget to enable them again once you are finished.

Fire Extinguishers

Another resource that can be used in preventing fires is fire extinguishers. Make certain that you have fire extinguishers readily available in your home. They are particularly helpful when small fires occur. Fire extinguishers should be kept in the kitchen, garage, and workshop areas of your home. Check them on a regular basis to make sure that they are working properly. Talk to your local fire department for training in how to use your fire extinguisher to make sure you are ready for any fire emergency.

Talk to Your Children

Children are the most vulnerable people when it comes to residential house fires. Sometimes, children are the causes of some of the most dangerous house fires. Over 100 thousand fires are set every year by children under the age of 5 playing with lighters or matches. Talk to you kids and warn them of the danger of playing with such devices. Be sure to tell your children to stop, drop, and roll if their clothes every catch on fire. Also, explain to them the role of a firefighter.
