3 Important Fire Protection Components

3 Important Fire Protection Components

Biles Fire Protection is here to help with your residential or commercial fire safety needs.

It’s your responsibility to ensure that every component of your fire protection system is well maintained. They help protect your investments and keep people safe. For well-rounded fire protection, keep these three components in mind.

Sprinkler Systems

Fire sprinkler systems protect equipment, buildings, and people in emergency fire situations. Fire sprinkler systems can mean the difference between safe exits and catastrophe — that is if they are in working condition. Some of the issues that sprinkler systems are susceptible to include problems with the valves opening and closing properly, corroded pipes, or damage to the sprinkler heads themselves. If any of these issues, or any other issues, are present in your system, it won’t operate properly when you need it to the most. It’s important that this fire protection is regularly checked and tested.

Light Bulbs and Batteries

There aren’t many situations more dangerous than trying to conduct a fire evacuation plan in the dark. Therefore broken, burned out, or missing bulbs should never be ignored. As soon as any of these issues are noticed, the proper personnel should be notified so that the light can be fixed. Also, it’s important to ensure that backup batteries are working in those situations when they are needed. Property managers and other maintenance teams should get into the habit of checking these items during regularly scheduled maintenance or at least once a year.

Maintenance and Sensitivity Tests

All aspects of your commercial fire protection program should be maintained and tested on a regular basis. The sensitivity of your smoke alarms, for example, should be tested on a regular schedule. Smoke alarms that are too sensitive will be set off in non-emergency situations, becoming a nuisance and unnecessarily alarming people in the building to the point that they’ll be less likely to take it seriously in a real emergency. Smoke alarms that aren’t sensitive enough may not detect the smoke at all or not until it’s too late.
