Basic Fire Prevention Tips for Restaurants

Restaurants

Make sure your fire prevention system is up to par for the safety of your employees and your customers.

While all commercial businesses have to think about fire safety, restaurants in particular are susceptible to fire hazards and must pay very close attention to their practices. Open flames, hot equipment, connections of electrical equipment, cooking oils… these are some of the things restaurants have that make thinking very carefully about fire prevention critical. There are a few steps of preventative care that restaurant owners can take to minimize the risk of a devastating fire.

Install an Automatic Suppression System in the Kitchen

It may seem like a no-brainer, but the truth is that an estimated 57% of fires in restaurants involve the cooking equipment found in the kitchen. This component of your fire suppression system is the most critical piece to install and maintain. An automatic fire suppression system disperses chemicals to stop fires, cuts off the flow of fuel and electricity to nearby cooking equipment, and also have a switch that can activate the system manually. You should have the whole system inspected twice a year.

Keep Handheld Extinguishers as Backups

Class K fire extinguishers are used for kitchen fires with grease, oil, and fat, and are intended for use after the activation of an automatic fire suppression system. Restaurants should also keep Class ABC fire extinguishers elsewhere for paper, wood, electrical, or plastics fires.

Regular Maintenance of Your Equipment is Key

Heavy usage of your kitchen equipment means that having professionals coming out for routine checks and maintenance is critical for your fire prevention efforts. Keep an eye out for frayed wires, cracked or broken switch plates, and combustibles near power sources.

Regular Exhaust System Inspections

Your exhaust system will need to be checked periodically for grease buildup. According to the guidelines of the National Fire Prevention Association, high volume operations require an exhaust system check every quarter, while moderate volume operations have checks twice a year. Monthly inspections are required for exhaust systems using solid fuel equipment such as wood or charcoal ovens.
