Common Myths About Fire Sprinkler Systems

Sprinkler Systems

What are some of the most popular myths about sprinkler systems that still persist?

Everyone knows that fire sprinkler systems can mean the difference between major property damage and contained property damage, but most people still have many different false notions about what fire sprinklers do and don’t do. Today we are breaking down some of the most common myths about fire sprinkler systems.

Myth #1: Water Damage from Sprinkler Systems is More Extensive Than Fire Damage.

This is a huge myth that many homeowners and business owners believe. Fires can be unbelievably devastating in their scope and how quickly they spread. Water damage from a fire sprinkler system is much less severe than damage from an untreated fire. Many times, the sprinkler system damage seems worse because the business owner never saw how bad things would’ve been if the fire took its own course. Sprinkler systems also use much less water than fire hoses—8-24 gallons per minute vs. 80-125 gallons per minute.

Myth #2: When a Fire Starts, Every Sprinkler Activates

This myth also causes people to have misconceptions about how much water damage will occur on their property in the event of a fire. Every sprinkler head in your property activates individually when it detects a fire temperature hotter than 155 degrees. Almost every residential fire could be contained with a single sprinkler head. 90% of all fires, commercial and residential, are controlled with fewer than 6 heads. It only takes one or two sprinklers to save a lot of lives and property.

Myth #3: You Only Need a Smoke Detector

While smoke detectors are important, they aren’t the only thing that matters when a fire breaks out. Smoke detectors provide early warning for human and animal occupants to get out of the building immediately and call the fire department. However, many times smoke detectors fail to activate because they haven’t been properly maintained. Even scarier, as the number of homes with smoke detectors in the country increased from 0-70%, the number of deaths from fire did not significantly budge.
