Should you invest in a commercial sprinkler system?

As a commercial building owner or property manager, one of your biggest concerns is protecting the investments you’ve made in your business and the people that work there. Fire safety is of critical importance when managing a commercial property or building, as a fire could seriously injure or kill employees or customers, damage property, destroy paper records, ruin expensive technology equipment or electronics, and cost you millions of dollars you might not have in repairs. So, should you invest in a sprinkler system to keep your commercial property and its inhabitants safe?

Why A Sprinkler System?

Sprinkler systems, whether wet or dry, can help make your business safer in multiple ways. Sprinklers work by detecting the heat from a fire and automatically turning on. While the spray from the sprinklers is not always enough to extinguish a fire, it goes a long way towards suppressing the fire and helping slow its spread. By completing a sprinkler installation, you will help ensure that occupants can safely evacuate in the event of a fire and that the fire is less severe in scope.

Sprinkler Systems are Often the Law

Beyond protecting customers and all of the important things inside of your business, sprinkler installation is probably the law where you are located. The NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, sets the commercial sprinkler installation requirements for your business. When designing your sprinkler system, you should always consult with local fire safety authorities to ensure that you are properly designing, installing, and maintaining your system(s). They can inform you of the permits, safety requirements, and codes that may affect your sprinkler installation and sprinkler system.

For most new buildings that exceed 5,000 square feet in size or buildings with renovations increasing the total size to over 12,000 feet, sprinkler systems are the law. They must be designed and installed throughout the building and provide as much coverage as possible. Sprinkler systems must also be installed in buildings over 55 feet in height, townhomes with more than two residential occupancy units, and self-storage facilities.
