What type of sprinkler system is right for you?

Whether you are looking to improve your fire safety at your home or in your place of business, you can benefit from installing a fire sprinkler system. If you own a business, an efficient and professionally installed fire sprinkler system may be required. Choosing the right system for the space is important, so how can you know whether or not to choose a wet sprinkler system or a dry sprinkler system to protect your home and business from fire damage?

Wet Sprinkler Systems

Wet sprinkler systems consist of overhead sprinkler piping that is filled with water under pressure. When a fire is detected and a sprinkler is activated or turned on, water comes out from the sprinkler head right away. Wet sprinkler systems are the most common and simple type of fire safety sprinklers. They are very trusty, easy to work with, easy to modify, and simple to maintain.

While being incredibly popular, wet sprinkler systems are not an option for environments where temperatures reach anywhere under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Freezing can cause piping to leak or be damaged, causing severe property damage in areas with electronic or sensitive equipment.

Dry Sprinkler Systems

Dry sprinkler systems do not have any water in the sprinkler piping. Instead, they simply contain pressurized air or nitrogen. The pressurized air is there to hold back the water in the main pipe valve. When a fire is detected, the air pressure in the sprinkler piping will drop. Consequently, the main pipe valve will open and release water into the piping to be distributed through the sprinklers.

Dry sprinkler systems are typically used in environments where freezing or below freezing temperatures are common like refrigerators, loading docks, and warehouses. Because they use a more sophisticated system to activate and distribute water, dry sprinkler systems require more maintenance and more costly installation.
